I know that this is not the answer that you are looking for, but
I have to wonder at your plight. What is it that anchors you to
the 14 year old cd player? I wouldn't be surprised if today's
$40 units could out-class your onkyo in quality and useablity.
Compatibility and CD-burning had a rocky relationship over the
last decade that seems to have ironed it's self out.

I like keeping an old Sony CD player around because if I burn a CD and
it will play on it I'm pretty sure it'll play on anything!

I agree with the other suggestions of using a higher quality blank and
slowing up your burn speed. If you have a 48X CD burner, you might
try burning your audio CD's at 24X or 16X and see if it works any
better. Half max speed or less. I find when I try to burn audio CD's
at max speed I get a lot of coasters, but I can burn data CD's just
fine at max speed. I don't know if you need to seek out TY brand, but
a good name brand like TDK seems to work.
