I am a studio engineer and musician. In some of the casual bands I play
with, I set up the PA (ugh, my poor back). I never get much time (if any) to
sound check, and frankly it doesn't do much good because the mixer is on the
stage, so I run out front and back for every tweak.
My question is this: Could anyone recommend some standard verb and delay
settings for various room sizes and types? I am using an Ensoniq DP-4, which
allows using both a verb and delay simultanoeously. Currently I use a plate
setting on about 2.0 seconds, which sounds OK I guess. I don't use rooms
because I figure the room I am in is already putting a room signature on the
sound so I am better off with some thing that does not have much backwall
return. OTOH maybe what I need is to put a different reflection than what I
am working with in the actual room.
Last night I played a very big wedding in a large, marble and glass room,
but next time could be a small, carpeted club, or outdoors. I need some nice
preset times witrh or without delay line, if anyone with some good
experience is willing to share some ideas. Thanks.
The plate is a good choice, but there are no standard times that will
fit a variety of rooms, unless you use that DP4 setting with the really
tight 'verb envelope, the one desinged to help thin vox, which tracks
the vocal directly and leaves no tail.
And remember, live in some rooms any added reverb at all is not your
friend, because there's already a load of it in the room as soon as you
fire up sound.
