Dual Core? (Hyper Thread or not)
Does the recording software you use exploit dual core?
Even if it doesn't, a dual-core CPU could keep other software (such as
Windows' numerous background processes) from interfering with real-time
audio work, couldn't it?
The so-called background processes usually don't amount to much.
Look at an idle PC with XP's task manager.
If the system I'm typing is doing nothing, the System Idle Process gets
less than 10%.
Only 10%? System Idle Process should get over 90% or more when nothing
else is running.
Misstatement on my part. The System Idle process does as you say get over
90%, which means that the background tasks are taking only 10% or less.
Windows has a lot of disk-indexing processes, automatic update downloads,
etc., that run at random times.
Disk indexing should be off, and automatic update download timing is
controlled in the Control Panel - Security Center.
When these are not running, and you are not computing anything, System
Idle Process gets 95% or more, even if you have applications open. (I
just checked the computer I'm typing on.)
See, my system has more background tasks than yours! ;-)
Ironically, its the Task Manager that absorbs almost all of the time, when
the system is idle.
