So with all that external stuff, who needs a laptop?

That's a computer, an interface, the cable between the interface and
the computer, the disk drive, the cable between the disk drive and the
computer, and two power suppies. And it's going to be pretty heavy
and noisy laptop with all that memory and CPU power. It might seem
simple to you but it sure sounds like a lot of things to go wrong to
me.

Good one, there! But you have a good point. With external disk drives
and Firewire interface adapter, it probably doesn't really matter what
laptop you have. Until you start having IRQ conflicts between the
PCMCIA slot and the video or networking.
