That was one of my complaints about DAWs in general for years. The
stock EQ in all of them seemed thin, unresponsive, and, like you said,
"vague" (great descriptive term!). I was constantly amazed by the
amount of boost or cut required, and by the fact that there never seemed
to be a good spot between "not enough" and "too much."
Then Digi offered a free EQ upgrade for Pro Tools. The difference was
enormous. It's much more responsive, requiring smaller increments to
sound good, and capable of actually doing serious good or harm with
extreme settings. Unlike previous stock EQs, it actually sounds "right"
instead of making ambiguous, ill-defined changes that never seem to
satisfy.
There are two morals there: One, most stock EQs seem to suck, but you
may find a third-party plug-in that makes you happy. Two, you may not
get EQ you like from Company A, Company B or even Company C, but Company
X may make one you like. Listen to several.
