I have found that the UAD-1 Precision Limiter is great for bringing down those drum peaks, which allow the whole level to come up quite a bit. And it does it in such a way that there is little apparent change in the sound (evidently "looks ahead" in processing). Like anything else it can probably be abused, but in moderation is really nice.
