I give them to my 14 month old boy. That way, I never know where they are when I need them, but find them when I don't and just end up using the TV controls. Same result as your system, but much more interesting!
(ps: this doesn't work with girls. They tend to put them somewhere logical)

Stupid idea - do what I do. Just keep the remote on top of the TV; when you want to change channels, just stroll over to the TV, pick up the remote - and click. Easy!
