Quicktime choppiness

For some reason QuickTime audio from the internet has always sounded OK
through my computer's built in soundcard & speakers in the monitor, but
"choppy" whenever I send it to my monitors. WMA & RA files have always been
fine, so I generally just choose those formats if there's a choice, but more
frequently I'm finding sites (like the High Roller microphones!) that only
have QT. I really wanted to hear that pristine quality through the big
ones!!
The internet computer's running Win 98SE with a PCI card MOTU 2408 Mk1 in it
(legacy equipment from a previous recording setup). I send this via S/PDIF
to my Multiface, but the choppiness happens straight out of the MOTU.
Is this some quirk of that particular setup? I'm assuming it's a sample
rate issue, but if I try to play MP3s at 22.05KHz (like some podcasts) the
system automatically reverts to the built in soundcard, so I figured it
could reject incorrect formats.
I see a similar q was asked in 2001 but there were no replies.
QT is currently 6.5.2 but this problem's been happening since the MOTU was
new. Yes I know it has extraordinarily crap converters - hence the digital
pass-thru.
