It's not a matter of whether or not it is "pleasant".  Why
don't
you
subject yourself to it?  After all, YOU know you won't be
killed,
unlike
the actual subjects.

Effective information techniques can be "pleasant":
cigarettes,
liquor,
books, chess games, letter-writing privileges.

I'm sure you're both aware that Scottie is simply parroting the
yapping
of
the rightwing blogs without any expectation of understanding
why
Normals
are revulsed by torture, so I won't bother tell you that.

True. And he's an engineer, not a scientist, so evidence is stuff
others
have written that must not be interpreted.

Looking at the U of Ill website, current engineering students
have a
General Education Advanced Composition requirement, as do all
undergraduates. Too bad this wasn't the case thirty-some years
ago,
or
he would be familiar with the rhetorical structure of presenting
an
argument which is then tested by evidence pro or con.

Yeah, but that's not a "job skill".

That would be generally true for most design engineers.
Business folks presenting a business case perhaps.
Having never worked in engineering you are unqualified to comment
and it shows.

I see.  Sort of like you having never worked in education or music, you
are unqualified to comment on those things, and it shows.

Like all taxpayers I pay for those things which does earn us the
right to have an opinion on the subject, particularly when the current
system in Ca.  fails to meet the needs of so many children.

Like all consumers, I pay for the products that result from the work of
engineers.  Do you see the fault in your "logic" yet?

I never claimed you have no right to you opinion as flawed
as it may be.

Strawman. I never said that you don't have a right to your opinion.

 And like
most arrogant teachers, you were just told to go pound sand by a 2-1
margin of taxpayers.

You believe that I'm arrogant?  lol

Lack of self awareness noted.

Lack of evidence noted.

Yes, as a result of the state's economic mess and the result of the
election last week, education in K-12 and community college will be
worse.  I suppose that you achieved your goal.

My goal is for California education to finally embark on a major
restructuring
that will better serve the children and our communities.
The current system has been largely locked in status quo in spite of
it's failures
to perform

On that we agree.

by the CTA.

That's where we disagree. Where's your evidence?

Hopefully this economic maelstrom will dispose
of the CTA's substantial political clout with the current legislature
and progress
can begin with a fresh view of the challenges and willingness to
change.

I spoke at some length Friday with Sam Blakeslee, our Republican State
Assemblyman, who was on campus for our commencement. He says that the
economic situation in the state is going to get far worse before it gets
better. He's predicting something like 25% of K-12 teachers being laid
off in the next year. Some 26,000 have already received notices. Many
of those may be rehired, but those notices were sent out before the
situation got worse. About 5000 were laid off last year. Fewer top
graduates will go into teaching now for the next 10 years or so, if past
patterns hold up. And, there is a large group of experienced teachers
about to reach retirement age. And, fewer people will be going to
college at all in the state for at least the next couple of years.
We're in a mess.
