Perhaps true, but enough is enough. By the end of the 90s, large studiothan all other monitor systems combined.
monitors had gone all but completely out of style. Might have something to
do with the fact that a modern 8" driver can linearly displace more air
than
a legacy 15".
Enough is never enough.
Depends whether you're talking emotion or reason.
The 604 has two great advantages: its bass is of a natural character
According to whom, but people who are so infatuated with the 604 they can't
see any of its notable failings??
604 bass is most definitely *not* of a natural character if overdriven.
Because of its Xmax problem, the 604 is way too easy to overdrive, given
its size.
Do some homework using the article you posted here, which mentions the UREI
813. Here's a picture of an 813:http://mixonline.com/TECnology-Hall-of-Fame/UREI-813-monitors-090106/ What
do you see in the picture? You see a second bass driver for the purpose of
alleviating the unnatural sounding bass of the 604 when it was driven to
circa-1977 monitoring levels.
You post the problem, then the cure, and yet you are not happy.
Another approach is to use the 504 or a 12" or 15" DC in a cab with a
separate sub.
Also for all its faults it IS what so many classic records were mixed down
to and mastered on.
That was then, this is now.
No speaker is
perfect, but a pair of 604s in good cabs still will provide a good
listening experience, as will a well modified set of Klipsch horns.
Is the 604 competitive with circa 1944 or 1955 technology? Probably. Has
loudspeaker technology improved by leaps and bounds since then? No doubt!
It would be reasonable to compare the 604 with modern implementations of the
same basic technology, which would involve large 2-way horn/direct radiator
studio monitors based on drivers made by Tannoy or B&C. What you will hear
are the good points of the 604, with many of the rough edges removed and
replaced by modern levels of fit and finish.
The Tannoy, which comes in several sizes but as large as 15" too, is
the same era of tech as the 604. And the Tannoy DC and the B&C are as
alien to the high end saloons as are the Altecs.
No one is saying that everyone needs to throw out whatever they have
now and buy a 604 or 605 ( or a Tannoy DC or a K-horn), only that
these technologies were in some ways given short shrift in the course
of alleged progress.
