I enjoyed it very much. It's well worth a listen.
Bob and I approach recording from totally opposite
directions. Discussion with him is most interesting.

Iain, you approach recording with experience, knowledge, judgement. I'm
afraid my relative ignorance could not be called a direction.

But you were fortunate to be able to work with such a
talented singer Bob. Thank you very much for sending
me the file. I will get back to you with some comments,
but did you change the mike position halfway through?
The first take is a little too distant for my taste, but the
second does sound closer.

I have passed on your comments to the artist, which she received with
appreciation.

The two takes were separated by only a minute, without changes that I am
aware of. However, I do notice an unusual sensitivity to playback equipment.
I first listened to the tracks when I was working on my laptop, using an
Echo "DJ" cardbus interface, and Sony MDR-V600 phones. The tonal balance was
pleasing. This was followed by transfer of the tracks to my DAW, with
playback via an Echo Audiofire2 interface, and the same phones. It sounds
quite distant, as you have observed.

Such a large subjective variation, particularly when the interfaces are
products of the same company, is unusual to me. I speculate it has something
to do with the flatness of the microphones. These were 6mm omnis made by
Audix, patterned after Earthworks. While cardioids usually have a little
bass bump to fight rolloff, these do not. The bass required to complete the
sensation of tonal balance may be too low for some equipment to reproduce.

I am aware that you have Earthworks mikes. Have you made any notes that
might be relevant to the analysis?
