The good news is I picked up a couple of live
Patricia Barber CDs (Companion and A Fortnight in France)
and they're both good and very well recorded.
I took a chance on 'Companion' for cheap a while back. Yes, I also find
the recording excellent, the case cardboard and the performances good
in
a if-you-like-that-kind-of-thing way.
The audiophile backlash against Patricia Barber, Eva Cassidy and
Jennifer Warnes is quite amusing. I've been bringing my Double Nickels
on the Dime LP to audio shows to get the bad taste out of my mouth.
I suppose there's a burnout factor, but, although I wouldn't want to
live without "Famous Blue Raincoat," I'd be okay leaving it at home.
I worried about "52 Vincent Black Lightning" when I heard it was a
flavor-of-the-month audition song some years back.
Somehow I missed out on the Minutemen.
It's just the whole "the female voice is the ultimate test of
fideilty" attitude that drives a lot of people crazy at audio shows
and stores. Not everyone is into that kind of music, and it really
gets stuffed down everyone's throat. I've heard a couple of
manufacturers and exhibitors jokingly say "ABSOLUTELY NO PATRICIA
BARBER" at audio shows when someone comes in and asks to hear one of
her CDs. That comment usually gets a lot of chuckles and knowing
nods.
It's not even a valid audiophile excuse: those jazz chanteuses are
singing in the tenor range but with fewer high overtones. Whose voice is
gonna stress your system more: Van Morrison's or Cassandra Wilson's?
This thread is a bit off track as I never suggested using Pat Barbers
narrow range voice for evaluating a system.
However, the very well recorded acoustic bass, piano, and drums on various
tracks would
provide reasonable tests of a system if someone so chose.
In any case, I enjoy her work and appreciate the exceptional quality of
her recordings. I generally find the studio versions
a bit more appealing than the live renditions.
It's like "Jazz at the Pawnshop," which everyone used to play at audio
shows 10 or 20 years ago. Nice recording, competent but bland
performances. I can understand how someone like Art can absolutely
love Eva Cassidy, but I want him to understand how someone like me
doesn't. Musical taste is subjective, and a little variety is nice.
You walk into room after room, and everyone is listening to some woman
on a piano. The guys at Zu Audio, for instance, know how to choose
interesting music for a show. Their room is like an oasis away from
all of the earnest women singers. David Wilson is pretty savvy about
music as well.
Remember Corey Greenberg ranting about Amanda McBroom? Or, to quote John
Hiatt on burnout in general, "one more heartfelt steel guitar chord,
girl, it's gonna do me in."
One advantage of these transitory faves is pikers like me can pick 'em
up years later at used prices and hear what the fuss was about.
As I've been doing, but the used price of some of Barbers stuff
is pretty high relative to most used CDs still in print.
Verse is a steal at 3.44.
