Sorry about that.. :-)

Please don't dob me in to the feds...

Don't worry...I don't chastise others for it. It's my
own
"collector"
neuroses that are to blame.

Tell me about it.. got about 8,000 CDs at the last
count... not
counting CDRs. :)

I have a serious and genuine question here. I have nearly
1,000 now
and am starting to find I have doubled up on a couple.
How do you keep track of what you have and what to buy. I
am a "sucker" for these bargain bins you see in many music
stores. I also will pick up CDs of the vinyl I have as
well as I like to compare the differences in mixing/EQing.

So how on Earth do you keep track, especially when you are
out and about trolling around music stores?

Quite simply, I have a very good memory.

I thought I did but it appears I am mistaken ;-)

Much of my collection is
boxed up, but I still know exactly what I do and don't
have. I've
never duplicated by mistake. At one time I kept a list,
gave up after
1000 or so.. the only purpose it seemed to serve was
nerd-like
activities. :-) The only ones I'm not sure of are those
that go
walk-about, but they invariably turn up. Might sound a bit
sad, but I
can also recall how much I paid for each CD and where it
came from. I
assure you it's not deliberate!

Should we call you Rainman? ;-)

Oh no.. I'm far, far less intelligent than him. :-)

I'm sure it's harder to keep track of
classical recordings, I don't have many of those.

Same here.

Here's what I don't understand: you're in a shop.. you see a CD and
think.. "do I own that"?

Not exactly. I am blaming having switched to a server for this because I no
longer handle the physical media I do forget what the covers look like.

So the problem is, I am in a shop (and recently on line so no excuse) and
see a CD that I know that I want to buy or have been meaning to buy and so I
buy it but I have recently already bought it. (BTW recently means within the
last 6 months)

Also if I have bought the LP I look out for the CD at a good price so I am
deliberately buying something I already have but have already bought it.

As an added confusion I am given CD-Rs by friends of artists they think I
would like to hear and so want to buy the original.

Now if all that isn't confusing enough some early SACDs I have (Stevie Ray
Vaughan springs to mind) did not have a CD layer and I couldn't be bothered
to copy them via analog to put on my server. Also I have a couple of DV
D-As that I can't rip for some reason as well.

BTW these are stored at their original resolution in stereo as well as
downmixed to 16/44.1. So there is a doubling up there as well :-(

So yes, I do admit it, I am at the stage of getting confused.

Is this a good time to also mention online stores and their pre-orders that
never seem to arrive so you give up and buy it elsewhere?

I had better mention the actual size of the problem. So over 1,000 albums
in various formats and I have mistakenly re-purchased 3 CDs and 1 XRCD. So
not huge or expensive yet but I can see the problem developing :-(
