Or copied the CD layer off a SACD and put in their car?

Who hasn't put a CD on some sort of music server?

Who hasn't made up a compilation disc of their favourites?

Who hasn't been loaned a disc and copied it? (Even while
contemplating
whether or not to buy it).

You're in the minority and just the sort of customer the
RIAA is looking for ;-)

I'll give a little example here of a recording in my
collection.

Let's take Floyd's DSOTM. I bought the original SQ Quad LP
version in 1974, I bought the 1984 release on CD, I bought
the 30th anniversary LP in 2003, I bought the 30th
anniversary SACD also in 2003 and bought the DVD-V of the
classic albums the making of, I also have paid for the Pulse
CD set (disc 2 is DSOTM) and the Pulse remastered DVD-V. I
have a pirate DTS CD of the original Tape quad mix and I
have a pirated DVD-A version. The CD copy sits on my music
server and on a back up drive as well as a copy in my car. I
have even paid to see Roger Waters live and he also
performed the entire DSOTM album. I believe I have paid
enough for the fair use of this piece of music!

Oh I should also add I have the Jazz side of the Moon SACD
and The Capella on LP (the latter is very good BTW).

This is only one example of many that I can name where I
have multiple *paid for* albums on different formats.

**IF** there was any fairness in the system with the RIAA
everytime a different format was released that would allow
the licence holder of the original work to upgrade to the
new format for the cost of the media or, in the case of
damage, replacement for the cost of the media. Alas this is
not the case and so the RIAA with it's greed driven agenda
encourages piracy.

I do ramble on about fair use but there is nothing fair
about any of the system at the moment.

I'm not arguing with you on any of your points...I agree with you.
It's just funny that I saw your list of questions, and I was able to
answer yes to every one of them.

Granted, I'm not a normal music customer. These days, the majority of
the CDs I receive are sent to me at no cost from record labels,
publicists and the artists themselves. When I do wander into a record
store and buy something, I can usually review it and get paid for it,
so I'm not out any money. I rarely rip or burn anything, although
that may change this year (I'm going to get a server.)

That aside, I've always been someone who supports musicians by buying
their product. The only time I've ever taped anything was on
cassette, for use in my car. Whenever I play a CD-R from someone, I
feel gypped. I miss all the materials that come with a CD. I don't
even like getting promo or advance copies of something unless it looks
like the commercial version. If you ask me to borrow one of my CDs or
LPs, I'll usually tell you to piss off and support the artist. I've
lent out 3 CDs in my life, and I'm 0 for 3 in getting them back. I'm
old-fashioned, and I'm a collector. Copies are shit to me.
