You may, but that will prompt another letter.
what are all these letters?
Who is Jason?
Jason Gross, editor and founder of Perfect Sound Forever.
Here is Bob's letter.
Dear Mr. Gross:
I write you concerning Marc Philips, with whom I am involved in
a nasty blow-up on the usenet newsgroup, rec.audio.opinion.
The argument started with the assertion by Mr. Philips that I
was unqualified to hold an opinion of my own. I described vintage
equipment that I feel offers performance comparable to some high
end equipment, and Mr. Philips responded by saying,
"No way, Bob. But then again, you don't have the same access to new
stuff that I do. Most of the stuff on this list is mid-fi at best."
Opinions about hifi vary all over the place. This is not the
issue. But Mr. Philips claims the right to invalidate the opinions
of others based upon the assumed superiority of his personal
experience. There may be elite equipment, but there are no elite individuals.
In fact, I have been heavily involved in this hobby since 1991,
and have had extensive listening experience with perhaps a hundred
systems, and passing exposure to many more. My customary amplifier
is a Plinius SA100MKIII.
In order to resolve this amicably, I made the following offer to
Mr.Philips:
"Do not invalidate my posts with the assertion that I don't know what good
audio is, and you do.
Don't do it, even if you believe it to be the case.
If you can not-do that one thing, we can at least avoid future blowups."
Mr. Philips did not respond positively to this overture. He was
already deeply into adhominem rundowns, and continued in the same vein with:
"And I told you I wanted nothing to do with you. Seems like we're
giving each other what we want, Bob! Nothing has been rejected!
What's the hold-up? You really do want the opportunity to kiss my ass,
it seems."
and
"No, I don't want to have a dialog with you. You're a whacko."
and so forth.
In another thread, he continued with:
'That's fine, Bob. If anyone asks why you are stalking me, I'll just
send them the link:
http://robertmorein.blogspot.com
That should explain everything."
The link provided by Mr. Philips contains a crude fake of a police
flyer, authored by one Brian L. McCarty, a a long time Internet
stalker. The contents are totally fictitious, except for the
photograph, which was lifted off my own web site. Mr. Philips is
well aware of this, yet he has chosen to reference it in what has
become an extremely dirty affair.
This affair has become extremely poisonous to all involved, and it
could spill over further. I ask your agency to request that Mr.
Philips accept the easy terms for discourse I have provided above.
Mr. Philips loses nothing of value if he chooses to respect the
rights of others to assert their opinions without the accompanying
assertion by Mr. Philips that they lack the qualifications to do so.
I will publish this letter on usenet at a later time. If you choose
to make a private reply to me, I will respect that privacy.
