pm,
"Shhhh! I'm Listening to Reason!"
to be advocating bottom line cheapness in public education.
I advocate effecitiveness. Seems you haven't followed the mic
discussion very closely.
No, you advocate cheapness. Low-quality textbooks printed like
a
Robert Ludlum novel, for example.
What is the life expectancy of a grade school or middle school
text
book?
3 years? If you cut the cost by 1/3 you give out new ones every
year
for no change in cost.
no, every TWO years.
looks like those low cost math books leave something to be desired.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dude, you haven't made sense this whole thread.
ScottW
a book lasts three years. Say it is $12 per book, you spend $4 per
year.
if you cut the cost by 1/3, it then becomes $8 per book, and If you
give
My mistake, to 1/3. Text books are ridiculously overpriced.
The cost to students should be cut by 9/10s.
I paid more for books last semester than tuition and fees.
ScottW
I agree; talk to the publishers. Market forces and all.
Publishers part of the problem. Cut 'em out.
Commission authors to write the book. A decent wage but not
for commission. State owns the book rights and the only cost
after that is printing at commercial printers.
Here's some pricing.
ScottW
That's a hell of a lot of commissioning to do. For example, we teach 5
sections of Music Fundamentals: 4 professors using 3 different books.
And that's just one course in one college.
One course, 1 book. And music fundamental probably doesn't have
enough
students to warrant. Math, english, history etc where 1000's of
students are
enrolled each semester is where it makes obvious sense.
See the problem?
No, I see BS obstacles.
Of course you do.
These are public institutions and the luxury
of
profs burdening their students with $120+ text books cuz they want to
has got to stop.
See bottom note.
Unless, of
course, you want to require all colleges and all the profs to use the
same book.
I do. See how simple effective solutions can be?
lol Good luck with that. Seriously, why don't you work on that and get
back to us.
Concerning "profs burdening their students with $120+ text books cuz
they want to": It's this kind of naive, ignorant, and false comment
that makes productive discussion with you impossible. So, "fine", in
the Italian sense.
