sonic inertness vs. weight?

The folks on r.a.p. have not volunteered an answer to this question, so I
pose it here. What is the lightest structural material that has a reasonable
degree of sonic inertness?

The purpose is construction of a device known as a "gobo", a portable
acoustic baffle. A fairly traditional method form of construction would have
a core hunk of plywood, coated with a less firm and more absorbent material.
But it would be too heavy for easy portability, especially considering the
need for ancilliary support.

There is a broad category of stuff called "structural foam." The most common
example is "foamcore", a kind of whiteboard, found at stationary outlets.
But it's not strong enough. Is anyone familiar with similar materials that
have good mechanical strength?
