it also remains that your claim of an adverstiser receiving a
negative review remains unsubstantiated as you seem to
have no idea on the status of this customer as an advertiser

I haven't really been following this, but in his role of reviewer, it
seems like a good thing that John doesn't know if they are an
advertiser.
The company was an advertiser at the time the review
was published, which was why I instanced the review
as an example of an advertiser getting a negative
review in Stereophile, This was contrary to ScottW's
blanket but incorrect assertion that you never see
negative reviews in magazines that receive advertiser
revenue.
Never say never I suppose. None the less the negative review
in S'phile is IME....rather rare.
Got any stats? What percentage of reviews are negative?
I suspect the words of Larry Archibald are as true or perhaps truer
today than they were nearly 20 years ago.
"In general, though, our errors tend in the direction of enthusiasm
about products that aren't as good as we say...."

:that brings up the issue of just what a 'negative' review is.
:When one is talking about a $5,000 or more piece of equipment,
:I would think it would do at least a few things well and overall, it
:would be a good piece. the question is this, is it any better than
:a $4,000 piece of equipment, and how much so, in what reagrards, and
:if it
:might be worthe the extra grand. Or, that maybe it is so good, that
:it is preferable to an $8,000 piece of equipent.
Does S'phile try to make value judgements? I don't think so.
:I don't even expect negative reviews of expensive high end
:equipment, in that it would be a piece of 'junk'.
Or it targets a different market segment than the classic "accurate"
hi-fi segment.
Can expensive gear be successfully mareketed with admitted deviations
from the definition of accurate for the benefit of improved subjective
appeal? Lots of high end gear avoids publishing detailed specs
because it would reveal deviation from accurate while they
apparently try to cater to the subjective preference market with their
own sound.
Interestingly, Bose seems to be the most successful at doing this
and a lot manufacturers have followed their lead though admitting
to following in the footsteps of Bose would the last thing they might do..

:I like you pair of innacurate Quads.
Me too.
:there is no such thing as 'accuracy' of sound.
:all you have is 'signal' accuracy, for
:wahtever that is worth
Well, for a speaker the signal output is in the form
of sound.
Most everyone's system I've ever seen has a final output
that is in the form of sound. You didn't go for those
implants now did you?
then no need for you to prattle about accuracy
.
