Inspired by the Eeyore/Arny challenge, I took a look at
the Stereophile website. Here are the first seven items
in "Recently Added" from the Review link (number
arbitrarily chosen to include Fremer):

Anti-Node: Active Room-Acoustics Correction
Keith Howard, Vol.31 No.1, January, 2008

I can recommend this to Scott; it links to Kal R's
discussion of the Velodyne room correction. Seems
stronger on theory and measurement than on 'audio
poetry'. Graphs.

Let's start out with this one - looks to me like an unrepentant repetition
of the bogus idea that the most effective way to improve room acoustics is
complex electronics. Corning 703 and products like it are cheap, and
suitable fabric for improving the WAF is down at the local fabric store, not
some high end store or web site.

Problem is, discussion of the most effective solutions for room acoustics
problems are probably not as good for advertising revenues, and have a low
audio voyeur interest factor. They could get your hands dirty and maybe even
ruin your manicure.

And they may look cheap and home-made, because they would be. Some
people care about that. You obviously don't. You probably whined about
what a factory-wired ST-70 cost versus a kit.

It's cheaper to make your own picture frames. Do you have *any* idea
what the margins are like in a frame shop? $10 worth of materials, a
$25 miter saw, some hanging wire... $250-500 for a frame. Do you make
you own frames, GOIA? You could even get the materials for less than
$10 by picking up used wood from demolition sites and straightening
bent nails. Do you constantly nag people who don't make their own
frames? Do you have the Mrs. make your clothes for you? There are huge
margins there too. Department stores even make money on the clearance
rack.

There are reasonably priced frame shops, and there are reasonably
priced sources for clothes, although some ability to do repairs and
alterations helps a lot. I buy most of my clothes from thrift shops
except for my one or two good suits, which I had made in Thailand when
I was there. Savile Row style at just over retail prices.
