That's part of it, sure. Also part of it is how the "MTV Generation"
was raised. I really think that the quality of pop music started
declining with the advent of video music. It's why we now have the
popularity of "good" looking performers who don't sing in tune, perform
vapid songs, etc.
like the Monkees?
1. Sang well in tune.
2. Played well (when they played. When they didn't [before
"Headquarters"], it was top studio players).
3. Generally better songs than "My Humps" Tunes by Carole King, Neil
Diamond, Nesmith, et al.
they were in tune, but songs were vapid
Some were (especially the early ones, built around the TV show), some
weren't.
of course, i could have mentioned other
bad old music, like bubble gum music
like Yummy yummy yummy, i got love in my tummy
Point. There will always be good, bad, and ugly pop tunes. It just
seems like the emphasis is on the later two more and more.
who is out of tune these days?
plenty of awful new music, but i hear it one note drone rapped in tune
Good Lord, where to start? How about just about all of the blondes
(Spears, Aguilera, et al)? Unbearable.
