RCA Sound Tape Cartridge (1958)

In 1958 RCA developed an audio cartridge system known simply as the
Sound Tape Cartridge.

It was one of the first attempts at taming unruly reel to reel audio
tape and making it transportable.

The housing appears more as an over-grown audio cassette, measuring 5
x 7 1/8 x 1/2 inches. Tape speed was either 3.75 ips resulting in 30
minutes of audio on 1/4 inch tape or 1 7/8 ips selected by a small
lever.

The recorded tracks could be selected via a switch that selected
stereo tracks "A" or "B", so it is in fact a stereo 4 track format
though most machines were 2 track mono. One shortcoming of the
machine, is that there is no fast forward. To fast forward, you flip
the cassette over and do a rewind, then flip it back over. Depending
on the machine, you could have 2 separate mono tracks or 2 separate
stereo. Most were 2 track mono.

The recorder features a built in speaker, and was all vacuum tube
technology. Interesting to note is the wide use of plastic for the
main exterior body of the machine. Plastics were coming of age...

The RCA Victor tape cartridge (also known as the Magazine Loading
Cartridge and Sound Tape) was a magnetic tape format designed to offer
stereo quarter-inch reel-to-reel tape in a more convenient format for
the home market. It was introduced in 1958, following four years of
development, at the same time as the stereophonic gramophone record.

Like the later Compact Cassette, the cartridges were reversible and
either side could be played; an auto reverse mechanism in players
allowed it to run continuously. Playing at 3.75 ips as standard, half
that of the most common reel-to-reel speed, the format offered four
discrete audio tracks that provided a typical playtime of 30 minutes
per side of stereo sound, or double that for monophonic sound; some
machines could play and record at 7.5 ips, reducing playing time by
half. Unlike the later audio cassette, but similar to video cassette
formats such as VHS, the RCA cartridge incorporated a brake to prevent
the tape hubs from moving when the cartridge was not in the player.
Small slot windows extended from the tape hubs toward the outside of
the cartridge so that the amount of tape visible on each spool could
be seen.

In the 1960s, RCA introduced a two-hub cartridge that looks like a
cassette on steroids. See the photo on the right and click on it to
open a larger copy in a new window. This uses standard quarter-track
1/4 tape.
