Any comments on the relative merits of these two players, particularly

I have never heard the Cambridge but it is a little cheaper than the
Marantz. I have heard the Marantz. It sounds okay directly driving, at
least, the more sensitive high impedance input tube amps, but not as
good as the Benchmark DAC. I borrowed one for listening tests and it
seems okay, subject to my usual reservations about most CD/DVD players.
I wound up going with a $199 Samsung, but there was nothing wrong with
the Marantz.

The Cambridge could be okay as well.

At anything over $100 for straight CD players or $300 for universals,
or so, availability of service parts and docs is a concern. I would see
if you could get a manual for either and make that a key factor which
one you buy.

The price difference is about $125 in favor of Cambridge.

If CD play is your primary concern, my advice is to listen to both
(preferably without knowing which is which) and if the difference
foesn't leap out at you buy the cheaper and put the delta in the
piggybank for the DAC fund. The Benchmark DAC is a thousand bucks, but
it's the most cost effective thousand bucks in audio, short of the JBL
or Beyma tweeter and wood midrange horn upgrade for Klassic Klipsches.
In fact more so since spome people still won't like the Klipsches. No
matter your speaker preferences you will like the Benchmark.
