I just put together a Nforce 430-based system with
onboard RAID 5. It's pretty fast, and plenty cheap.

So tell me about your new server.

It is not a server, its major purpose in life is to be a workstation
running Powerpoint and maybe display some DVD-based video.

There are only two 250GB HDs, so its just plain old striping despite the
chipset's advanced features.

What motherboard did you use?

M2NPV-VM, but with a PCI-E video card socketed as well. 3 available video
outputs of which 2 will be used up-front.

Is this socket 939, 940, or M2 ?

M2, dual core 3800.

2GB RAM.

Nice entry-level workstation, eh? Well maybe a smidgen more than
entry-level. ;-)
It's amazing what one can get at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, I am
constrained by the need to run Avid. It is frequently impossible to take
advantage of the latest and greatest, due to the lagging nature of
established hardware compatibility for that application. Avid is the
quintessential example of hardware dependency. It is so multithreaded, they
cannot anticipate possible race conditions in a hardware independent way.
