my Dad's Newcomb Classic 25 was one...but none that
would be consider truly high fidelity by today's
standards. A Citation II with some judicious cap
upgrades *does* make that grade.

Not at all. It isn't modified because its purpose in life is to be as
factory-stock as possible. I'm arready surrounded with good-sounding amps.
If the ST-120 had audible faults, it would be counter-productive to
eliminate its specialness and make it like all the rest.
