People seem to be interested in collecting miserable Japanese mass market
items from the 60's and 70's with jukebox visuals, as well as other
chromy, unredeeming crap.

Not necessarily true. I have a small collection of old stuff that includes.

Yamaha NS-1000 speakers (2 pairs)
Tandberg TR-2075 and TR-2080 receivers
Tandberg TD 20A SE R2R
Tandberg TCD 3014A cassette deck
Beocord 9000 cassette deck
Krell KAS amps
Cary 300 SEi amp (well, still in production)
A dozen tuners by Kenwood, McIntosh, Accuphase etc.

All of them still perform very well even by today's standards. OTOH, it is
not necessarily cost effective to maintain some of this stuff given what
"disposable" $200 DVD players and $500 receivers can do. However, in my case
it is as much about media as anything else. I've been buying inventories of
recordings for some time now and surprisingly even the tapes are usable most
of the time.

Cheers,

Margaret
