Re: UMS Head Units?

That Yakumo unit Matt pointed out looks very interesting. I have been
seeing more and more HU's these days with SD card slots built into the
front, as well. I believe that feature will become much more common in the
coming years. As SD card storage capability gets ever larger, I foresee a
day when someone's entire collection can be held on a, let's say, 10 gig SD
card and you just pop that into the front of your HU. Trust me, the next HU
I buy will DEFINITELY have an SD slot (though that is several years down the
road as I JUST bought a new MP3 HU player).

Know that some manufacturers (Alpine in particular) DO NOT make it easy to
connect auxiliary equipment to their HU's (unless it's the same brand, of
course). This is why we haven't seen more interconnectivity with HU's. The
iPod has become so ubiquitous that most manufacturers have realized they
have no choice but to accommodate the device, however this usually means
buying expensive interconnection cables so that ID3 tags and operational
control goes to the HU.

Evening All,

In the advent of the iPod/ MP3 player becoming so popular it seems
logical to me that it should be possible to connect one's head unit
directly to an MP3 player via USB, read the disk/ flash memory, decode
the content to an audio stream and transfer this back to the head unit.
UMS seems almost universal now so I will be suprised if one of the
bigger companies hadn't rolled out some sort of UMS Headunit/
Interface.

I'm pretty sure that I've seen this for the iPod via it's propiertary
connector but I have don't seem to be able to find a generic UMS
capable connector. The only generic solution I can find is the pretty
obvious one of connecting the line out of the MP3 player to line in on
the head unit. This is rather basic though as it means that the
existing controls of the head unit cannot be used to operate the MP3
player, neither can any of the ID3/ OGG (etc) tag information be sent
back to the display.

Anyone know if these these things exist? Maybe I'm just looking in the
wrong place...
