Well, Rich, you left out the most important part of the equation......your
budget.
There are some truly AMAZING heads out there now, especially the ones with
integrated screens, DVD, GPS navigation, built in hard-drives, etc. About
any feature you want in a head unit (EQ, time-correction/DSP, X-over, DVD)
you can get, but for a price. I remember in 1991 almost all CD head units
cost between $300-$500, regardless of manufacturer. Boy, are those days
over. Today you can get a CD/MP3 player for around $80, or you can spend
well over $2,000 for the latest "high-end" head.
That being said, I too was just in the market for a new head-unit, and I
REALLY did my homework. My budget was $350 and after many hours of
comparing specs and prices (frankly, listening is not as important as it
used to be as all CD players sound basically the same, IMHO), I went with
the Alpine CDA-9853. It IS NOT the flashiest when it comes to displays.
You can spend the same amount of money and get a fancier display from the
likes of Pioneer and Sony. But to me, this unit offered the best
combination of features at the best price. It was the only unit out here
with a 5 band parametric EQ (33 bands to choose from) AND time-correction.
Also, the sound quality and reliability of Alpine is a proven quantity for
me (this is the third Alpine deck I have owned). I found one on Ebay for
$215, they currently list for $349 in Crutchfields.
However, like I said, price is everything. You may have a much different
budget than I had and you may have different priorities (like a color,
high-def display). I am not one to say that my deck is wonderful and all
others suck. But for MY budget and MY priorities, I feel I made a really
good choice.
