Sony Mobile ES noise problem

I'm having a strange problem with my system that I just can't figure out.
Everything in the signal chain is Mobile ES. I have a CDX-C880 head unit
and a CDX-828 changer which feed into a XDP-210EQ digital EQ/X-over through
the RCA jacks. The Sub outputs feed a dedicated amp, the front and rear
channels go back to the head for amplification. All of the cables are
Streetwires Zero Noise and are brand new. It's a very simple system.

Just last week I noticed what I can only describe as "impulse noise" (like
the pops and crackles you hear on vinyl LPs) on CDs when played in the head
unit. It doesn't happen on all CDs, and though they tend to be hard rock
or ones with a lot of higher frequency/ sharp attack (snare and cymbal) -
Evanescence, Joe Satriani - I also have problems with some Tori Amos. The
pops always occur at the same point in the track. Again, it's like surface
noise on a vinyl record. Some of the CDs I've had for years, some are
pretty new. None have ever exhibited this problem before. So, for
example, on Alice In Chains "Unplugged," track #3 "No Excuses" there is a
pop at 25 seconds, another at 33, another at 35, and two at 36. This
happens every time it's played. The pops always occur in the same spot in
the image (center, center right, center right, and far right for the cited
example). What really makes this strange is that if I play the same disc
in the changer there's no noise anywhere. That seems to rule out a
defective disc.

I've swapped the inputs on the EQ so that the head unit feeds into the
input marked "changer." The noise is still there. When I've tried
bypassing the EQ entirely and just run the signal from the head's EQ output
back into the head's inputs (coupling the cables together) there's no
noise. That would make me suspect the EQ. But if it's the EQ, why doesn't
the noise occur with the disc in the changer? It should be sending the
exact same data to the EQ. And why only certain discs? What kind of
interaction could there be between the head and the EQ that could cause
problems on specific discs?

I've run out of ideas for isolating this problem. I don't know whether to
have the head or the EQ serviced. Has anyone heard of this type of problem
before? Any suggestions or reccommendations will be greatly appreciated.

I'm also looking for suggestions on where to have these components
serviced, if that's what it comes down to. Sony offers repairs on an
exchange basis, with no guarantees the replacement will be the same model.
That just doesn't sit well with me.

TIA

David
