That marriage would at least have been consumated.

As I said in another reply, to Jim, if Matthew were to marry Lavinia
or Mary, but could not consummate the marriage, should his widow not
be able to collect any benefits that would otherwise be due her?

If Lavinia didn't want to get married and Matthew died only hours later, she
should certasinyl have the right to not want the benefits associated with
the moment.

I'm surprised that so many people are bashing Daisy for doing the right
thing.

I'm not bashing Daisy, but let's face it, she hasn't been a clear
thinker from the get-go.

She is being clear headed now. She knows the 'marriage' was only meant for
the benefit of a dying man's peace in his last hour.

She can't see past the end of her nose in
this instance. William wanted her to take the pension. We know she
cared for him to some degree, even if it wasn't romantically, and he
certainly loved her, so I see no problem with her granting his dying
wish.

She feels it is wrong. How can you not see something wrong with her being
coerced into doing something she believes to be wrong?

If she feels that she shouldn't use the money for herself,
there are countless ways it could be put to better use than sitting in
the government's bank account.

The belief that 'government money' belongs to the people, so it is ok for
them to take whatever they can get their hands on because they know better
than the government how it should be spent? If Daisy doesn't take that
money, it will go to other widows and/or other veterans. If you take money
from the government you are taking it out of the pockets of others. Daisy
certainly has the right not to try and redirect public funds for her
personal wishes...or likely the personal wishes of the people around her
that coerced her into this mess in the first place.

In any case, I don't believe there's
anything wrong with her accepting it and doing whatever she wants with
it, anymore than it would be wrong for Ethel to (theoretically) accept
the pension of a man who didn't love her and didn't marry her
willingly.

Ethel is the mother of his child...and any such funds would be for the
support of his child, not for the support of the tryst.
