Well, he needed his gun ...

That appeared to be the logic.  Translation:  it was completely nonsensical
for him to still be in town.  The writers just needed a way for the cops
(written as having been outwitted) to still find the answer to the 'where
are they now' question.

Worse, the gun was the only reason he needed to be there in person; he
could have given them the info on his cell phone from the Hamptons,
sipping cocktails with Divya, which is where I'D be.



Why not use the gun to shoot the cooling coils/system?  Maybe they would
die
from freon inhalation, but I'd prefer that to freezing to death or to
dying
of a gunshot wound while firing randomly at the door.

Yes it was.  I might have understood her doing it after freezing for several
hours and becoming delusional, but she did it right off the bat...and she
didn't even have the good sense to try to hide behind Castle while firing
the gun at the door.  ;-)
