The web TV Guide gives me two weeks ahead and I get a list that
reaches further out than that for some of my favorites. My limitation
in the past has been that I didn't have room, even with two VCRs, for
all the new episodes of favorites when I was gone for a month in spring.
As I understand it, I can record more shows with a DVR, which I only
need to do once a year, but can't record 2 at once and simultaneously
watch a 3rd "live", as I can with my two VCRs.
No, you cannot. Each VCR has one tuner. You can watch whatever station
the tuner is set to, or monitor a recording taking place.
running outboard) and watch a different--aka 3rd-- program directly.
All you have to do is connect things together correctly. This is, I'm
told, flat-out impossible with DVRs.
So I hear. A major step down from my current set-up.
The same applies to the DVR: You may watch the channel it's set to or
monitor a recording taking place on a specific channel. If the DVR is
dual tuner, then each of the two tuners can be used to record
simultaneous programs on different channels.
If you were to watch a third program live, you'd need to engage a third
tuner, like the one in your tv.
That's the major "plus" for series recordings in my mind (second is
recording two shows at once, and I can watch one that's already been
recorded during that).
Doesn't that make 3???
Remember that the DVR is a computer. The hard drive is accessed
randomly on a computer, which is what allows it to perform multiple
functions at once. Thanks to random access, a recorded program can be
watched at the same time a new program is being recorded.
Watching a recording doesn't engage the tuner. So no, with a dual tuner
DVR, watching a recorded program doesn't conflict with two recordings
being made of shows airing simultaneously on different channels.
In other words, I can't watch a 3rd program unless I've recorded it
previously, which totally fails to address the 3-programs-at-once
conundrum network schedulers love to create.
