And yes government should cut spending during an economic
downturn. If the citizens are being forced to cancel services
and spend less, so too should the politicians.
Even worse, the government is spending MORE on some things because
of the bad economy. All those stimulus checks and bailouts are not
normal parts of the budget. And since so many people are out of
work, and businesses are making less profit, the government isn't
getting as much in taxes.

All this suggests that any nonessential spending has to be examined
very critically.

Well said. Too bad no one will hear you. Americans are addicted to
spending non-existent money (credit), and that trickles-up to the
government as well. Spend, spend, spend.

Eventually that $150,000 per home (and climbing) national debt will
come back and kill us. Remember Germany in the 1920s when the whole
country went bankrupt, and it cost a million marks just to buy a loaf
of bread. That's us in about ten years.

Hey, I was against the war in Iraq. I could have saved you hundreds
of billions a year in nonessential spending.

Just imagine the billions that could be saved by abandoning the failed drug
war that can never be won. The one that has made the Mexican cartels so
rich and powerful they are close to toppling the government down there , by
feeding American apetites for pot and cocaine. Add to that all of the money
spent on the prison system here. Then start calculating the potential tax
boon marijuana alone could bring this nation. Spend a fraction of that on
drug education and rehabilitation and still have enough to balance the
budget in rapid fashion. Better to spend on aussault weapons for our law
enforcement people in order to offset the automatic weapons sold by American
companies to outfit the cartels. It's a win/win for the arms manufacturers
and dealers.

But by all means...let's waste time bitching abouit the pittance spent on
public broadcasting. One of the last bastions of real investigative
journalism.

It's time to crack down on arms dealers instead of drug dealers. Better to
let people get high rather than get dead or in jail. If junkies can get
access to treatment...and can't make enough money to support their drug
habits...the situation will stabilize without creating a permanent criminal
population streaming through a revolving door costing us billions if not
trillions.
