Yes, The Life of the Party Is Moving On, Folks

WHAT!? NO MORE WQ?

So me and the babe are vacating North America for the next 19 weeks to
mostly car trek around Europe, meaning no WQ for your daily reading
pleasure to look forward to for a while. Sorry to make the summer
that much duller for you all, but c’est la vie.

It’s a great trip we’ve got planned, covering 14 countries [15 if we
can squeeze in Belgrade in Serbia and maybe even some of the other
Balkan surroundings], with extended stays in London, Montpelier and
the babe’s hometown of Frederiksberg, nearby Copenhagen. This means
we won’t get back till the fall TV season will be well underway –
departing June 7, returning October 18. I’ll miss Fall Premiere
Week! Hey, but that’s what streaming and downloading is all about.
Besides, if there ever was a perfect time to do this, the upcoming
fall season with really nothing to show for itself, except for only
Fringe, maybe a hopefully improved 30 Rock, possibly the new Flash
Forward, the always cheezy Nip/Tuck and, of course, the wickedly
satisfying Dexter [John Lithgow should be great fun to watch this time
around], makes this that perfect time as it doesn’t look like much
else will be missed at the start of things. And no, I won’t be
posting from there while we’re roaming across the Euro terrains – I
think I’ll be kind of distracted by too many other things to even
think about something as mundane as posting.

Which brings up an interesting question: after this trip, will I even
bother to return to posting here at all?

It’s already been about 7½ years of this nonsense for me, I’ve pretty
well said all I’ve had to say, and the really vapid likes of the
upcoming fall season [how many times have I said that this decade? –
but this time I really mean it] isn’t making it very conducive for me
to want to pick up where I’ll be leaving off, so who knows? I mean,
the cancellation of Thieves – that snappy, breezy, tongue-in-cheek
piece of sheer escapist fluff that was almost on a par with the old
Willis-Sheppard classic Moonlighting but, alas, a much-too-short-lived
one at that – is what got me kickstarted on this posting stuff.
However, now I find it both quite disconcerting and, frankly, somewhat
defeating that I could be ending my illustrious run here with
Dollhouse, which almost too criminally easily achieved the unenviable
singular distinction of being the despicably worst-ever series in TV
history, hands and feet down but that nevertheless still managed to be
renewed for a second season for unfathomable reasons that defy even
the slightest modicum of logic. How unjustifiably cruel is that?
Only goes to show how much the networks have regressed in the last 7½
years.

But at the same time, though, it’s kind of a warm and fuzzy feeling in
my tummy to know that I’ve been vindicated by CBS proving once and for
all, for any who still foolishly doubted, that a network can make more
money than any of the others on just good old-fashioned bread-and-
butter scripted shows without having to go too far off the deep end
into that dark, dead-end realm of reality junk. Hey, it’s what I’ve
been saying all along: all a network needs is a good, solid vision for
scripted shows and an astute knack for scheduling strategy. Granted,
CBS’s strategy for the kind of scripted shows they air sucks, but it’s
populist entertainment that works for the undemanding masses, making
it a win-win – viewers get what they want, the network makes money.
Of course, that win-win approach to true, as opposed to imaginary,
victory is something certain myopic RAT members of the insular Whedon-
geek variety here, among others, will never understand the simple
concept of, preferring instead to lull themselves into a delusionary
belief that Dollhouse is some kind of orgasmic manna from programming
heaven which is winning something, somehow, somewhere for someone.
Yeah, right – delude on, brother. So much for my parting shot at
Dollhouse.

Oh, well, I guess you guys can all take bets while I’m gone to see if
I’ll crack and make a comeback or just disappear altogether – even the
great shows have to fold sometime.

Anyway, in the meantime, it was grand juvenile fun while it lasted,
and so as of June 7, and perhaps forever more, I take my leave with
not a bang here but a whimper. At least, though, it’s still good to
know that nobody has yet been able to figure out what WQ stands for.
I’m such a genius. But I’ll give you all a hint to keep yourselves
mentally active this summer so as to avoid any creeping dementia: it’s
cleverly derived from an actual single 11-lettered word – think
syllabically and then just a little beyond that. Not that that hint
will help you much, but let’s see who else is the real genius in this
group. The winner will get a special WQ no-prize.

Meanwhile, why don’t we all nostalgically revisit that which got the
whole ball of wax rolling for me here:

I still sniffle to this day over the loss of that show. And Smith,
you know I’ve got a soft spot for you too.
