Obviously someone had to have heard her sing to even get a stage audition. I
got the impression watching the video that the two hosts knew what was in
store and were chuckling to themselves watching the judges and audience
reactions.

So may people turn up for these things, that if all had to audition in
front of the judges you could run several hours every day for a year.
Which they don't. So there are some staff which do pre auditions, to
whittle it down from say 60000 people to 200 people. And they tend to
pick either ends of the spectrum, the very good and ... the very not so
good.

Then they do the auditions in front of the judges who prune it down to
say 20, who show up in the live shows. I don't think think the judges
are likely to hang around when they aren't getting paid listening to a
long line of hopeful potentials :)
