CNN ratings up with nonpartisan approach
But news network losing primetime ground
By DANIEL FRANKEL
<>
Coming out of a big election year for the network that culminated with
it finishing second in rating behind only NBC on the November night
Barack Obama was elected to the presidency, CNN was down significantly
in primetime during the first quarter of this year
From January through March, the news net saw a 23% drop in its core
demographic of adults 25-54 from 8 to 11 p.m., and a 10% audience drop
in total viewers during that daypart. Its "Campbell Brown: No Bias, No
Bull" lost soundly at 8 o'clock while going against the expressly
biased likes of O'Reilly and MSNBC's Keith Olbermann.
[big snip]
I won't argue that viewers are gravitating toward shows that reflect
their ideological biases, but has anyone seriously considered that
CNN's anchors are mainly awful? Not their reporters or commentators,
but their anchors.
Wolf Blitzer is boring. Lou Dobbs is just hateful. I didn't like
Campbell Brown when she was on NBC, and Larry King has serious
cognitive issues. Anderson Cooper is just okay.
LOL... I totally agree with you, and CNN has always been my news
channel. I just don't watch their prime time shows, and cannot
understand why Larry King is still on the air.
My guess: Larry is still on the air because 1)As a "legend", he still
gets good guests and decent press and, 2)CNN has nothing else in the
pipeline.
OTOH, I love Andrea Mitchell and Norah O'Donnell. I'm probably in a
minority of one who really likes David Shuster and wishes his program
was still on at 6PM. Tamron Hall is another one who is just okay.
Hate Ed Schultz. Rarely watch Chris Matthews anymore . . . the man
has no "normal" tone of voice. If he isn't yelling, he's talking too
loud. (Great guests, though.) Like Keith (who's gotten a little too
full of himself) and love Rachel.
It's amazing, but I agree with all your opinions above, except I don't
hate Ed Schultz, just prefer him in small doses. Do like Shuster, but
if he had to be moved, I'd prefer that they had chosen Mike Smerconish
if they wanted a talk radio host.
I didn't like Ed when I heard him first on the radio. Even when I
agree with him, I don't like his presentation. He has this old school
tone of voice and manner about him - sort of blustery and loud. Not
like Matthews . . . in a different way. It's akin to the old Senator
way of speaking, which, among others, John Kerry has and drives me
crazy. I voted for Kerry, so that'll you tell how much I hate this
speechifying voice. Jeez, talk like a normal person, already!
Smerconish would've been a good choice and, maybe, Mike Barnacle. I
agree with them less, but they clearly have taken the 21st Century
Media 101 class.
I'm almost always watching entertainment TV during the prime-time
8-11PM hours, but if I'm looking for news, I go to MSNBC. After the
local news at 11:30PM, I turn to MSNBC's reruns of their prime-time
shows. I *used* to have on CNN continuously until 8PM and then tune
back in at 11:30PM, but cripes, their anchors . . .
Like you, I'm wondering how long it will take CNN to take a serious look
at them. :( I don't watch CNN or HLN anymore, unless there is
breaking news; then I check to see who the reporters are on CNN and MSNBC.
HLN: the Nancy Grace channel <g>. God, I can't stand that woman. If
my taste in news anchors has a theme, it's that I really don't like
angry, aggressive, loud people, especially if they appear ill-informed
and/or badly educated. Rick Sanchez in another one who's like chalk
on a blackboard. If I had my druthers, I'd give Candy Crowley a
weekday, prime-time hour. But hey, she's overweight, so that's not
gonna happen in today's TV market.
