I'd almost be tempted to bump it up to '95 or '96, personally, but at
least the channel hadn't *totally* lost its original identity yet
then. The loss that annoyed me more, however, was MTV2. It was
originally launched as "M2" sometime in 1996 (I think), with the
intent of being the place where all the videos that used to be on
"real" MTV went, and their playlists were full of obscure stuff that
never would have had a shot on the original channel in the first
place, along with lots of "old" videos from the '80s that hadn't been
played in years - 24 hours of solid videos, and with no commercials
save for in-house promos. Then the ads came. Then the generic pop
videos that could be seen on any other channel came, followed shortly
by reruns of MTV's host of crappy reality shows. Now you'll probably
never find a video on there unless it's 3:45 AM.
*VH1 post 2001 (when they started relying too much on pop culture
nostalgia like "Best Week Ever" and the "I Love the..." series and
crummy reality shows)
I actually liked the "pop culture channel" format at first, but it
definitely wore out its welcome quickly, thanks to constant reruns and
some terrible shows (I seem to recall "I Love Toys" being especially
awful). This leads me to another spin-off channel though, one they
haven't screwed up quite yet, but I fear they will soon enough - VH1
Classic. As of right now, *most* of the programming is still
music-related, though the actual videos seem to be getting harder to
come by, but they've also begun casting off things like (yet more)
reruns of the "I Love the..." shows there and running
movies...probably not a great sign of things to come.
Another channel that comes to mind, sorta, is Trio, but I'm not sure
if the network actually no longer exists, or if DirecTV just stopped
carrying it. At the time it went away, I seem to recall hearing that
it had been bought by Bravo, and that Bravo would be carrying over
much of Trio's original programming, like the "Brilliant But
Cancelled" series and so on - but as far as I've noticed, that never
happened.
