Buy some software and some tv tuner cards. Install the sofware and

to split the cable (may need to by amplifing spliters). If you want
recomendations on hardware and software, I can tell you what I use.

What do you use? Does your software come with automatic timer
recording that turns the computer on (and off) at appropriate times? A
decade ago I had a cheap Hauppauge WinTV setup with quick and dirty
recording via VirtualDub. I've not kept up so I've no idea what people
are using nowadays, or if at all, considering the convenience of other
options like Tivo.

IOW, what I can do with a VCR? Do you have any actual DVR brand/models
that you can list? When I search DVR's on Google, I just get confused
as to their actual capabilities.

I'm not sure what your asking? DVD with hard drives? DVR proper?

I haven't searched yet, but I likely will have to when my VCR conks
out and I discover that not even Wal-Mart or Target sells cheap VCRs
anymore. Personally, I wouldn't mind what this poster was asking
for--a device that works as simply as a VCR, the only difference being
the recording media used. And hopefully at a price that doesn't break
the bank and won't require monthly subscription fees.
