My beloved and I finally
bought our first VCR in, I think, 1984, shortly before we moved in
together. It was a big Mitsubishi (don't remember the model #) and was
built like a tank; weighed at least 20 pounds, and was of far better
quality than anything I've seen in a store since. Cost a bundle:
Around $800 (Canadian), IIRC. It lasted about 10 or 12 years. I've
still got it, in a storage locker; apparently it needs new heads and
for a long time I've been kidding myself that eventually I was going
to have it repaired. Time to face facts, I fear. I hate to get rid of
it; it's like a relic from a golden age of home video technology.
I know what you mean. My first VCR was a Mitsubishi that I bought in '85, and I thought it weighed about 30 lbs.! ;) I paid $1100 for it, which of course, was just before all VCRs dropped to *half that* in price. It was still working though, until a couple of years ago, when it wouldn't eject a tape for me. That tape is it still in it, and I'll bet it is still operational, if I would get someone to remove it for me. Everyone convinced me that would cost more, than buying a new DVD/VCR combo that would do everything... so there it sits... in the bottom of my entertainment center.
Be that as it may, I can't remember the last time I watched a videotape
of anything, unless it was an old episode I'd taped of some TV special
or other. I was shocked when the time came to replace the "Mits" (as
the sales guy called it) and I discovered what crappy quality most
latter-day VCRs possessed. At one point we went through two Panasonics
in as many years. Fortunately, by then they were cheap enough that one
could almost regard them as disposable.
That was a shock, wasn't it? :)
I have no idea what the first film I/we rented was; it was nearly 24
years ago, and that would be a pretty inconsequential memory. But I do
remember that we started buying VHS tapes before we even got the
player. GMW
My first use of my VCR was not to rent/buy tapes, but just to record TV programming. My first tapes made were of the VH1 or MTV year end review of the best music videos, and the Chicago Bears play-off and Super Bowl game. The Bears season was my motivation to buy the VCR, although it was too expensive for my budget. It turned out to be a good decision. :)
