That was the point. We saw the team go into his house, and suddenly
start making faces, like they'd smelled something horrible. When the
bodies are revealed, it's clear that they've been dead for a while,
hence the stink.

Exactly.

Thus, if they've been dead for a while, it suddenly becomes possible
that they've been dead longer than initially thought.

True.

Why did he have the gun in the car in the first place?

Likely because he'd shot the family already, and was getting rid of
the gun or something. Which then means the family was dead before
the road killings began.
---
Could be. I am thinking that maybe intended to kill his family at
that function in which he was happy at and everyone including his
family was in "wow, what's got into him?" mode over his
uncharacteristic glad handing. However, that woman pissed him off and
he got his release and killing high then and he spent an
uncharacteristically enthusiastic day, including pleasing his wife in
a loooong time, but then it wore off. Then after more belittling he
killed his family and went on his killing spree or killed them
during the time he killed his second and third victims but before the
local PD called the FBI. Just a theory, since no time of death was
given IIRC. He could had well killed his family before he shot anyone
else.

That works, after all if he was fantasizing that the family was in
the car at the end, then why not fantasizing about them throughout
the episode?
---
Exactly although I think he wasn't fantasising at the very beginning
as I indicated above. I think he killed the family after he killed
his first victim but before the local police called in the BAU. but
again I don't have any solid evidence so I can't be sure.

That would be the trigger of why he suddenly started killing people
on the road. He wasn't thinking of killing his wife, which is what
I'd been thinking until the ending, he'd already killed her along
with the kids, which then "allowed" him to kill car drivers.
----
The woman who blew him off after cutting him off reminded him of how
many times he was blown off by his wife (get your minds out of the
gutter-not you Michael Black) and how she blamed him for his dead
youngest daughter and he blew up. I think he had the gun in the car
in the box with a bow on it to take it to work with him so it
wouldn't be left in the car but no one would know, alternatively he
was probably thinking of blowing away his co-workers. Remember he was
about to blow away his supervisor but the supervisor saved his own
and other's lives by saying the right thing at the right time by
blaming the Six floor bean counters for their mutual problems. Again,
that teacher made herself a target and he got satisfaction by blowing
her away. So if he did kill his family already the woman in the car
saved the lives of Norman's coworkers by being a bitch.

The clues are also there. There's one seen in his basement or
garage where he seems to actually fire the gun as a test run. Maybe
that was imagination, but maybe it was real, and when it happened,
I did wonder how he could do it without bothering the family.
---
IIRC, he didn't actually fire it with a live round but racked it
while it was empty before and after he made the clamp for the gun
barrel to hook onto the car door. But you could very well be right
and the family was probably already dead. Still, he would had had to
worry about the neighbors hearing so he didn't actually shoot the
weapon at night.

There's also the scene where he goes to each of their rooms, all
having the occupant's name on it including the mother, and they all
send him away in some way. That seemed exagerated at the time, and
after the ending, becomes explainable by the simple fact that they
weren't alive and he was imagining it. We thought at the time
that he had a horrible home life, a family that doens't like him
(the profile given out about that time suggests as much), but in
reality his perception of how they feel about him is imagined,
after he'd actually killed them.

Michael
---
I almost totally agree, but I think that was how the family regarded
him even before he killed him. He imagined at the end that his wife
still blamed him for the death of their youngest daughter. That
probably happened in real life as well as the daughters regarding him
as a failure. They blamed him and he knew it and it combined with his
own deep grief and it caused him to snap.

BTW Norman short of reminded me of Micheal Douglas's William "Bill"
Foster, aka "D-Fens", in "Falling Down" and also the real life John
List. Do not get horn rimmed glasses. The fictional Noah Bennet wears
them too on "Heroes" LOL.

Last thing, I wonder what will happen to his cool model car
collection?
