Shouldn't you note what the OP wrote? He never said he was using a
converter box. He strongly implied that he was watching a standard
definition broadcast (although he didn't specify if it was over the air
or via cable). It's been common, this season, for SD broadcasts to air
only the center cut of a wide-screen image in lieu of letterboxing it.
A converter box can't change that.
A converter box should have options to change the viewing format of an
OTA HD signal. Since that's not the problem, he should follow the
source of the signal he's getting to find who is doing the cropping.
But hey, I can only answer for the information that I have. If it was
a converter box problem, it'd be solved.
