Actually this one is one the fans got wrong. It was a Xerox 914
*black and white* plain paper copier. It was never said to be color
copier. Its reason for fame is that it was the first ever *plain
paper* copier and it came out in 1959. It is okay for a product to
come out late in a series. Sometimes it takes a while for technology
to trickle down . . .
This is a very important point. When new technology "comes out" it is
usually very expensive and not many have it. Later on it gets
widespread.
Apparently true Xerox copiers were much more expensive than other
technology; my employer in 1973 had _one_ Xerox copier for the entire
large building and usage was strictly controlled and rationed.
However, we had other copiers that used other technology (wet?), but
usage was controlled on those as well. Generally we were supposed to
use carbon paper and normally we did. Large runs used other
processes.
Then the cost of Xerox work went down and eventually Xerox machines
were used for duplicating work replacing the old mimeograph and spirit
duplicators, even offset. I believe mimeograph was a very inexpensive
reproduction process, but it was messy and cumbersome and low
quality. I sure don't miss it. I wouldn't be surprised if the
precinct had a spirit ("ditto") duplicator (the pale blue copies) for
internal memos and notices.
In 1973 most Xerox machines produced copies of a light gray that
didn't look so great.
