Didn't care for it. Slow paced.
Wow, I found the show fast-paced. They introduced and developed a large
number of characters in a rather short time and opened a bunch of plot
lines.
Basically a clone of the other CW shows featuring the young, snooty,
spoiled, beautiful people.
Also too much like Summerland.
Do not see the Summerland connection except for LL's mom. She briefly dated
the principal at the kid's school but that was about it. In Summerland she
and the kids lived with 3 other unrelated people and there was no father
present. There wasn't much school activity. Except for McCartney, the kids
were pre high schoolers. Most action took place at home and at the beach,
didn't it?
The original Bev Hill 90210, esp in its early years, was more than a
mere soap opera. It had a little extra edge to it. Each character
stood out as an interesting individual, whether you liked them or not,
even if they were somewhat of a cliche.
In the new version, all the girls looked and acted alike, likewise for
the boys. Way, way too much dependence on cliche.
Again I saw differences in the characters and am willing to allow for
development over time.
In other words, this show is exactly the same as Gossip Girl, except
on the opposite coast.
It may turn out to be a left coast GG, but I think it's too early to tell
for sure. Except for earlier episodes, GG hasn't been centered at school
very much. Last night's two episodes used school settings to a fairly
significant extent. I can definitely see why people would perceive the show
as another version of GG and it well might be as it moves forward. GG has
better defined characters right now as 90210 is a new show and needs time to
develop.
Also, when I went to school, it was very rare for a teacher's kid to
be in school with us; generally they went to a different school (or
the teacher lived in a different district or sub-district).
I went to school with the junior high principal's kids and other teachers'
kids. Same for the high school principal. I didn't grow up in a large metro
area though. We had a single high school for the entire area, although
several elementary (6) and middle schools (2). I felt sorry for the kids who
had parents who were teachers/admins at the school they attended. They were
really boxed in.
Overall, I thought the two episodes were OK. Nothing spectacular, but I'm
not the target demographic. I'll watch to see what direction they go with it
and to see if they can get some additional and richer character development.
I was dubious of Shenae Grimes as the lead but I though she was really
pretty good. Some of the Degrassi (the new bunch) alums seem to be finding
their way into main stream shows. Nina Dobrev just headed up that MTV
musical. Jessica Stroup's Silver is an interesting character. I like that
there is some crossover in characters and plot lines with the original. I'm
like they have a strong parent presence. The original started out that way
and then dropped the parents. I was surprised with the teacher characters.
I'm guessing they intend to actually place a good deal of the show at school
otherwise there wouldn't seem to be a need to develop teacher characters.
