Three of the top four are ones I have plonked. YES!
David, you'll just have to work a bit harder.
That conflicts with my goal to be the last one standing.
*plonk*
I don't believe you. In fact I bet you're reading me right now.
Am not.
That's fine. You're doing me a favor. Being killfiled only adds to my
street cred.
That's a bit like saying, "Hey, look, there's a diamond buried in the
sand on that beach!" And then it turns out that it's Coney Island and
the only people on the beach are grumpy old men over 60 who think they
look good in speedos. Good luck tryin' to find that diamond, never
mind making it work for you.
Your three-day weekend was either very very bad or very very good.
Did I mention that I got DSL installed on Thursday? So definitely the
latter.
Going from dialup?
Yep. We live about a mile outside of town limits (the town is pop.
about 5,000) on a stretch that has very few houses. Our house is on a
2-acre parcel carved out of a *large* grazing property and the house
for that original property is, like, a half-mile away. Somebody
neglected to tell us when the local phone company made the lines
outside of town DSL-capable. We had very old above-ground lines for
years, then about 3-4 years ago, the lines were moved to below-ground
-- but heck, I'm not a tech geek, I'm a motor-mouth -- so now that we
have DSL, I in hindsight realize that that's when the phone company
(Sprint, now Embarq) made our area DSL-capable.
In short, though, what happened is that we have new neighbors, moved
in around the top of last month after spending the last six months
building a house on a new parcel carved out of the larger one, but
right next to us. They told us about the DSL and we got it within
three days.
I'm now just trying to figure out how to configure my desktop (which
has the DSL modem) and my mother's desktop and my laptop into a
wireless LAN. Windows' Networking "Wizard"s are anything but. My
laptop has had a linksys wireless-g card for the past year and Embarq
gave us a linksys 2.4 network adapter (which I assume is essentially a
non-portable USB card to wire a desktop into a wireless network. And
it seems like whatever the Network Wizard and Wireless Wizard were
doing was making the modem (with built-in wireless router) anything
but accessible to either the desktop or my laptop. Very frustrating.
Seems like these things should be just plug and play, period, and they
aren't.
But in the meantime, it's nice to have at least my own desktop plugged
into DSL. Agent access is almost immediate (on dial-up, in
high-traffic times, I'd be almost locked out of Agent even though I
have APN.) And it's nice to be able to finally watch embedded videos
on basically every website. Formerly, if it wasn't YouTube (which
puts the whole thing into a buffer in the desktop cache so that you
can play the whole thing again once it's fully streamed), I couldn't
watch any embedded videos.

LORELAI: I am so done with plans. I am never, ever making one again.
It never works. I spend the day obsessing over why it didn't work
and what I could've done differently. I'm analyzing all my shortcomings
when all I really need to be doing is vowing to never, ever make a plan
ever again, which I'm doing now, having once again been the innocent
victim of my own stupid plans. God, I need some coffee.
