The question of how alive the Terminators are is open for debate, since
it was established in T2 that Skynet purposely limits the programming of
its drones so that they do not become self-aware and start to question
their orders.
Would Skynet really cripple its cyborgs this way unless it needed to?
That it thinks the programming needs to be limited suggests that their
hardware may have the capacity. In fact, it suggests that it had
happened. We also know that Cameron had been reprogrammed by John. He
could have removed this constraint on her.
Would it be an interesting twist if she taught young John to reprogram
Terminators to give her this ability in the first place?
