Listen up! The media industry doesn't want you to transfer your
clunky VHS tapes onto blank DVDs, since they've put in this fricking
macrovision on the programs you're taping! Which means you have to
pay up to get those shows you wanted to pass onto your blank DVDs for
free! Everyone in the industry wants to get their damn share of the
pie! I've tried to transfer several movies, but it keeps getting the
"You can't record this program" error message! And I've been trying
to get rid of my old VHS tapes, but they won't let me! That really
sucks!
No, they didn't want people renting VHS tapes and copying them.
How would you feel if people were stealing your work?
Two separate issues colliding. Macrovision was created to stop people
from copying a videotape onto another videotape, when that was the only
medium. Now it stops people from copying videotape onto DVD, absolutely
essential for continuing to enjoy the product you paid for -- and back
then it could be a good fraction of a hundred bucks -- when the medium
becomes obsolete.
Same thing is happening with downloaded music that dies when your five
or whatever it is approved computers are no more, and of course DVDs
when that format is replaced by Blu-Ray, and when that is replaced by
holocubes or whatever.
Underlying it all is they question the industry studiously avoids: How
many people who copy something would otherwise have gone out and bought
it?
