End of analog TV cable service?

Could anyone comment on the following?
The news has reported that those of us who have cable TV service won't
need a digital converter because cable signals will continue to be
analog. Until 2012.
That sounded great to me until I saw the 2012 part. I strongly plan
to keep my TV sets and VCRs until that time. That means when cable
does all digital, my set up won't work anymore.
I use my VHS VCR often. I frequently watch one show while taping
another, but I suspect that ability will cease when I have to use the
converter box (unless I get multiple and split them out).
In addition, I like my video tapes which I have a large size
collection of. If I were to get a new TV set down the road, would it
still take analog output from the VHS VCR?
Any comments appreciated. Thanks! [public replies, please]
