Re: ABC Family picks up "Sophie"

from the hollywood reporter

Also Friday, ABC Family and the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. confirmed
ABC Family's 13-episode pickup of "Sophie," a new comedy from
Montreal-based Sphere Media.

So what's the buzz on this one?

Like "Rumors" last year, it's based on a show on the French CBC. Someone
wrote about it in the newspaper yesterday, his job is basically to watch
French shows and write about them in English, and he felt it was a good
"translation" of the French show, which he didn't think was the case
with "Rumors".

I had planned to watch it, but somehow have yet to get enough
interest in tuning in. My impression from the ads was that it
was in the vein of "Rumors", that sort of intangible "Canadian comedy".
I can't define how they differ from US shows, but somehow there
is a distinction.

Also said to be garnering interest from U.S. outlets is Global TV's
drama "The Guard."

Hmmm, from comments I've read here about that program, I'm guessing
that interest isn't coming from the major networks.

I've not watched that either. The ads have been playing up the
sex/love angle, but since that somehow didn't tempt me enough, I
don't know how key a part it plays in the actual show. One review
I did glance at said the personal stuff was the best part of it (and
I can't remember more than that to know if that was a compliment or
not).

Of course, one US network bought "Falcon Beach" and while we saw
it for a year before the US sale, it only lasted a second season before
being cancelled, presumably because it didn't work out on the US network
and the funding was no longer there to keep it going. Oddly enough, I
actually liked and watched the show, even though it really wasn't anything
that special.
