The picture was nice, crisp, detailed. It didn't affect the story any,
though. There's a lot of new video tech that I'd use if it were free,
but which I don't feel the need to pay for until such time that the lack
of it prevents me from understanding what I'm watching. As old SD and
analog equipment breaks down, I'm sure I'll be replacing those units
with newer items, but I'm not put out by waiting to take advantage of
any price reductions that occur in the meantime.

The innovation that may force my hand first is the abolition of analog
TV in the U.S. If I understand the advance info, those new digital-to-
analog converter boxes will have the same single-channel-at-a-time
limitation as cable boxes, necessitating a separate box for every analog
video recorder that I want to potentially record on at the same time.
Each household is supposed to get only one discount coupon towards the
purchase of one of these boxes, right?


Each household can get two.


So by the time my heavily VCR-
dependent household (we have seven currently in active service, and
occasionally all seven get programmed for the same night) gets all these
new boxes, it might make more financial sense in the long run to get new
digital recorders of some sort that have built-in digital tuners.

I'm waiting to hear what others complain about in that regard. I've yet
to see one of the converter boxes or read any accompanying instructions.
