You're assuming that they could even *get* the rights to the original
if they wanted to. It's quite possible that Telemundo (which is owned
by NBC-Universal) still holds the US broadcast rights to it.
Secondly, there are something on the order of 150 episodes of the
telenovela. How many of those do you imagine they'd get through
before they pulled the plug either from low ratings or because the
strike finished and new eps of UGLY BETTY were in the can?
How many people do you think would bother getting into it if they
knew that there wasn't much of a chance of seeing very much of it
before it was yanked?
