While at work, my co-workers and I were catching up on 'Chuck'. Near
the end of 'Chuck Verses the Truth', Big Mike (Mark Christopher
Lawrence) was telling Morgan (Joshua Gomez) about his fling with Mrs.
Tang and we all simultaneous started laughing. We weren't laughing
at what was being said, but the banana Big Mike was eating was a
different lengths as the closeups between Morgan and Big Mike took
place. First it was a nearly complete banana, then short on the next
shot, then again long again.

It seems so trivial, but do you think they do this on purpose? Watch
the program and you will see.

It's a fairly common continuity error. On single camera shows, they
retake a scene again and again and again, filming from one character's
perspective, then the other, then close up on both, then in long shot,
etc. They edit the scene together looking for expressiveness on the part
of the actor speaking, framing, lighting, reaction shots, etc.

The actor likely ate portions of half a dozen bananas during filming.
It's impossible to call that type of continuity error sloppy because
it's so difficult to maintain continuity while eating.

Sloppy continuity errors are when a prop exists or is moved between
takes, or when a character is wearing an article of clothing and then he
isn't.

Three camera shows (are any still done this way?) won't have such errors
because the multiple perspectives are filmed during the same take,
although even these shows can have different camera set ups for the same
scene and multiple takes, but it's less common. The disadvantage is that
the set up becomes much stagier since you need three times the room for
the cameras to move and special set ups to avoid catching glimpses of
the other cameras in your shot.

Even happened in ads. In the Subway commercial where the 3 guys are
eating and 2 guys have the new Subway sandwhich and the 3rd guy has
leftovers and music plays when they open their mouths the kind of
Hispanic-looking guy asks the leftover guy "Can you eat with your
mouth closed?". He then takes in a longer shot what is apparently the
first bite from the sandwhich he is holding, although earlier he had
eaten some and was playing the Mariachi music when he opened his
mouth.
